Tim Tszyu vows to break Anthony Mundine’s Aussie boxing record and move divisions like Alvarez

Tim Tszyu has vowed to smash Anthony Mundine’s pay-per-view boxing record as he plans to take his boxing career to the next level – and claims he has what it takes to defeat big names in heavier divisions like superstar Canelo Alvarez. 

To break the pay-per view record, Tszyu needs in excess of 200,000 main event subscribers, a number set in 2006 by the first bout in the famous Mundine v Green rivalry.

‘It will be broken, in the next few years it will be broken,’ Tszyu told the Courier Mail.

‘It’s crazy. I was just thinking the other day, 100,000 pay-per-view buys is massive in Australia, 100,000 pay-per-view buys in America is dog s**t and my goal now has become to be like a Tyson Fury, at that level.’ 

Tszyu has 15 wins by way of knockout in his 21 professional fights, and he’s currently in the United States as he chases a shot at the super welterweight title.

The son of boxing legend Kostya Tszyu will call out the winner of Sunday’s rematch between Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano – but he’s already looking beyond the super welter world title to possible fights in heavier divisions.

‘With my build, I’ve always said once I win the title in 154 [pounds, the super welter limit], I’m going to be like Canelo, I’ll go back and forth in any weight division later on, it doesn’t bother me because I’m strong enough to mix it with the big boys,’ Tszyu said.

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez began his professional boxing career at 15 years old, fighting in the light-welterweight division. 

Alvarez moved from light welter to the welterweight division, then light-middleweight, middleweight, super-middleweight – all the way up to light heavyweight, which has a limit of 175 pounds, or 79.3kg.

Canelo Alvarez has a remarkable boxing record of 61 bouts, 57 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws. Tszyu believes he can emulate him by moving through weight divisions

Tszyu believes he’s strong enough to take on bigger bodies and can emulate the rise of Alvarez.

‘These boys are small. Remember how Terrell Gausha said nobody bullies him? I picked him with one hand, and threw him to the other side of the ring, he was running around,’ Tszyu said.

‘I feel like I’m the strongest in my division.’

The Aussie star is currently the country’s biggest name in boxing, averaging 70,000 pay-per view sales in his past fights, doubling the numbers generated by tough nut ex-footy star Paul Gallen.
