With COVID-19 continuing to have a major impact on the world of cinema, Wonder Woman 1984 is the latest film to be affected.
Director and writer Patty Jenkins made the announcement that the film would release both in cinemas and on the streaming platform, HBO Max. It is out now, but only available to stream until 24 January.
I can’t wait for the world to see this amazing woman on the screen. She’ll blow your mind and warm your heart. @GalGadot killed it in this film, and she does all that great and hard work for only the most honorable reasons. She is a true #Wonderwoman so I hope you enjoy #WW84 https://t.co/Q7fYuNAEab

The film isn’t available in these formats on every device – WarnerMedia confirmed that you can watch it on Apple TV 4K, Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, Amazon Fire TV Cube and 4K Fire TV Edition smart TVs, Chromecast Ultra, AT&T TV and supported Android TV devices. Games consoles don’t fall under this list – but HBO will be adding more content and devices throughout 2021.
HBO Max will automatically play at the highest quality it can, so to get 4K resolution you will need a compatible device, a 4K TV, a Dolby Atmos sound system and internet with high download speeds (25 Mbps or higher, 50+ Mbps is recommended). You can read more on the HBO Max help pages.
Wonder Woman 1984 is now available to watch in UK cinemas – you can buy your tickets from Odeon and Vue. However, you can only visit if you’re based in a tier 1 or 2 area – and with most of the country in tier 4, this is nearly impossible for the majority of people.
Fortunately, the film is now available to rent on demand. If you’d rather stream it via HBO Max, we also have instructions on how to do that from the UK. Keep on reading for more information and check out the biggest movies of 2021 right here.
Where to rent Wonder Woman 1984
Wonder Woman 1984 is now available to rent on demand in the UK. It costs £15.99 from all retailers. This is slightly more than the cost of a month’s HBO Max subscription, though it is undoubtedly the easier option for watching the movie.
You can lease it from the following places:
How to watch Wonder Woman 1984 in the UK on HBO Max
To watch Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max, you’ll have to have a HBO Max subscription, which costs $14.99 per month. HBO has abolished its seven-day free trial ahead of the launch.
Unfortunately, both the HBO Max website and app are geo-blocked if you’re in the UK. However, this is easily overcome through the use of a VPN.
VPNs (virtual private networks) allow you to change your IP address so you can browse the internet as if you’re based in another country. To sign up for HBO Max, you will need a US server. For the best servers, performance and pricing, we recommend either NordVPN or ExpressVPN.
Once you’ve downloaded your chosen VPN, you’ll need to go through a bit of a complicated process for payment before you can watch Wonder Woman 1984.
Billing information for HBO Max
For the next step, you’ll need the HBO Max app. We have successfully tested this method using NordVPN.
Once you’ve signed up for your VPN of choice, you’ll need to download it on either your iOS or Android device. The HBO Max website currently only allows you to sign up if you have a payment card that’s tied to the US. If you don’t have that, here’s the steps you should take:
- Launch your VPN on your iOS/Android device and connect to a US server
- Create a new Apple ID/Google Play account in your browser that’s tied to the US (leave the country blank)
- Register your new account on your iOS/Android device app store
- You should now have access to the US app store – download the HBO Max app
- Create a new account with your email address and password
- Use PayPal as your method of payment (this can be a UK account)
- Once your account is verified, you can sign in from any device
You can see further details – such as how to sign up on specific devices – in our guide to watching HBO Max here in the UK.
If you want to watch via this method, make sure you sign up before 24 January 2021, as this is when it will be leaving the platform.
As always when using a VPN to access content abroad, be aware that you’ll be in violation of HBO Max’s terms of service, so the company could theoretically cancel your account if it realises you’re using a VPN. Proceed at your own risk.
